BUDGET speeches aren’t what they used to be. Almost exactly 170 years ago in 1853, William Gladstone spent four hours and 45 minutes on his. On Wednesday his successor, Jeremy Hunt, got through his first effort in less than a quarter of that time, without a top hat in sight.

Profiteers Galore

Our ‘betters’ in the bourgeois media frequently inform the working class that it is a bad thing to demand a pay rise as this only fuels inflation which only makes things worse. This is, of course, a load of rubbish. Hard-fought wage increases are very rarely the cause of inflation. It may happen in a few cases, such as couriers win a half decent wage resulting in the price of a takeaway going up to compensate, but these are the exception rather than the rule.

Budget Day is never good news for workers – least of all when it’s under a Tory government. But whilst the Chancellor droned on in Parliament workers were walking out in a new wave of strikes against the austerity regime. Tube workers and train drivers, junior doctors, teachers and civil servants were all taking industrial action over pay.

Gary Lineker has been reinstated as presenter of {Match of the Day} following an apology from the BBC. The BBC has wisely backed down over the Lineker saga whilst the Government tries to distance itself from a row that was clearly of its own making.
